Kirstall Acacia is very much a loner in the herd, so I wasn’t surprised when she decided to give birth quietly in the field one evening when nobody was around to watch apart her best friend Luna. As usual early in the morning sleepy eyed, I glanced across at the foaling camera by my bed before going to check outside in my dressing grown and wellies. I first checked on the new babies in the foaling unit and then the nearby fields for any little mishaps. When I all most slipped up on a warm afterbirth, I soon realised someone had foaled in the hours of darkness. Right on cue a little head popped out from behind Acacia and started dancing about as if to say, “Hi I’m here, we managed with out you“. This colt’s name wasn’t going to be difficult, it had to Snelsmore Sundance.
That evening I brought Acacia and Luna into our foaling unit. Determined to join her friend, that evening maiden mare Luna gave birth to a beautiful filly Snelsmore Sienna, but what a pity she didn’t have a chat to Acacia first. Motherhood wasn’t so natural to Luna, she seem to get every wrong. She had good intentions and was fascinated but seemed clumsy. She knew she should lick clean her baby but couldn’t get to grip with the whole suckling thing, it tickled too much! Luckily her foal was very forgiving and Luna soon learnt how to be a more caring mother with a little help from me. These days I can’t help having a quiet chuckle to myself when I see her rather smart little daughter now giving Luna the run around. I think its Sienna’s pay back time.
