The Shetland Performance Show has come to an end for another year, and what an unforgettable day it turned out to be. Sometimes the best stories begin with a few unexpected challenges, and ours certainly did.
As show day approached, it looked as though we might not even make it. Our lorry was in the garage, and to make matters worse, I was suffering from a severe allergic reaction to midge bites. Attending the show felt almost impossible, but with determination, a little luck and the kindness of those around us, everything finally fell into place. Looking back now, we’re so grateful that we never gave up.
Once we arrived, our ponies made every hurdle worthwhile. Every one of them behaved impeccably, and each gave their very best in the ring. We couldn’t have asked for more.
The standout star of the day was undoubtedly our two-year-old filly, Snelsmore Blossom. Blossom impressed the judge being awarded Miniature Junior Champion, followed by Overall Junior Champion. The celebrations didn’t stop there, as she was then crowned Supreme Champion and awarded the Silver Medal. To see such a young homebred pony achieve so much was an incredibly proud moment.
Our success continued with Snelsmore Venus, who won her Miniature Mare class before going on to claim the Miniature Championship. Venus continues to mature beautifully, in to a show pony and brood mare.
One of the most memorable moments of the day came thanks to a last-minute change of plan. While I was occupied in another ring, Izzy stepped in to show Snelsmore Mystique at very short notice. Despite having little time to prepare, the partnership between them shone through. Together they won their class, were awarded the Reserve Championship, and secured their Golden Ticket to the Veteran Final at Arena UK.
This achievement was especially emotional for us. Mystique and Izzy share a special bond that has grown over many years. Izzy first led Mystique at this very show, in this very same ring, when she was just seven years old. Watching them return together years later to qualify for such a prestigious final was a full-circle moment that none of us will forget.
While the championships and rosettes are always wonderful to receive, days like these remind us that showing is about so much more than the results. It’s about the friendships, the memories, the teamwork and the incredible ponies who make it all possible.
