Remembering Benston Gloria and Grutness Evlora.
In 2001, Cliff and I travelled to the Shetland Islands to gain a deeper understanding of the Shetland pony and the unique environment in which they thrive, as part of our early journey toward establishing our own stud. It was an unforgettable experience. The people were incredibly friendly and welcoming, and although the landscape was harsh, it was also breathtakingly beautiful sadly, something impossible to truly replicate here.
Our visit coincided with the annual Shetland Sale, and, unsurprisingly, we couldn’t resist. We returned home with twelve foals, among them Benston Gloria and Grutness Evlora two bloodlines that continue to play an important role in our stud today. Both mares matured into beautiful examples of the traditional Shetland type.
Gloria, by Sweyne of Gott out of Clothie Ziron, enjoyed an excellent show career and produced eight foals for us before later moving to Finland. Evlora, by Viscount of Grutness out of Flora of Muness, never saw the show ring and did not have her first foal until 2007, but she went on to prove herself as an invaluable broodmare. She produced four wonderful fillies before passing away peacefully here at Snelsmore.
Both mares have left a lasting legacy at Snelsmore through their daughters, granddaughters and grandsons.
We have created a new Legacy page, to remember special ponies such as these two mares, and we will continue to add more over time. We invite you to explore our website and visit the Legacy page to learn more about them.
