Our Beginning: Stranduff Mischief

Snelsmore Stud began with a little grey mare called Stranduff Mischief.

One wet winter’s evening, long before the internet, we were sitting together reading Horse & Hound magazine and chatting, as you do. The conversation turned to the idea of buying an in-foal Shetland pony. We already had two as our children’s pets, and they had grown on us so much that we began to think about breeding and creating an interest for me. Although all of our equine experience was with producing sports horses and breaking racehorses, we noticed a stud reduction advert. We knew nothing about Shetland ponies, but curiosity got the better of us, and off we went.

That was how Mischief came home to Snelsmore, and she certainly lived up to her name. A feisty little mare, she arrived with a colt foal at foot Kington Conquac and a chestnut colt foal,Kington Za Za Rac. It felt as though Mischief had met her match with Cliff, and that was the moment our journey began.

Mischief went on to have thirteen foals here at Snelsmore Stud. She was a very special character, truly one of a kind. This tiny twenty-nine-inch pony certainly gave us the run-around, but in time she learned to trust us, and we were privileged to earn that trust.

The rest, as they say, is history. Mischief lives on through her daughters, grandchildren and great grandchildren, and she will always hold a very special place on our legacy page, as the little mare who started it all.
